This module will provide learners with a brief introduction to the research process and how it applies to nursing research. It is meant to serve as an introduction and forms the foundations for the rest of the topics to covered in this unit. The principles will be further expanded in the following modules.

Following this, the module discusses nursing theories. A theory is defined as a “supposition or system of ideas that is proposed to explain a given phenomenon”. A theory about caring may contain concepts, such as the person, the nurse and interactions.
Many nurses may associate theories with the natural sciences like physics, chemistry and biology, rather than the applied sciences such as psychology, sociology and nursing; however, nursing research also uses theories to explain phenomenon. Nursing is an applied science that consists of both the art and the science of nursing.

Activities are suggested throughout this module. They are suggested activites only. Undertaking the activities may assist participants in completing assignments that are a requirement of this unit of competency.
